The Compare/Contrast Paragraph should have been turned in today via Google Classroom OR hardcopy written in ink or typed.
If you did not finish the vocabulary practice assignments, then finish them TONIGHT for homework. There are more study links in the Google Classroom. The deadline for the first group of USA Testprep assignments is approaching soon (1/31). Mastery is 80% and you can retake the assignment in order to achieve mastery. GO FOR THE 80 OR HIGHER!

Compare and Contrast assignment:
*Read the excerpt from the "Atlanta Compromise" speech by Booker T. Washington and the excerpt from The Souls of Black Folk by W.E.B. DuBois. *Answer the 5 questions. These will be turned in at the beginning of class. *Answer the discussion questions on the backside of the page in your composition notebooks. Come to class PREPARED to discuss. SAT Words: SAT Review Lists 1-5 is due on or before Friday (1/19). Late papers will not be accepted. There are now practice assignments for ELA in USA Testprep. Students already have a login for USA Testprep. It's the same one they use for Science and Math. The first deadline to complete assignments is January 31st. Students will have some class time but are also expected to work outside of school. More assignments will be added.
Believe or not but we are halfway through the school year! You and your student are now only 8 months away from high school. The high schools should be visiting the 8th grade teachers later on this month to go over the class recommendation process. We will have to base our decisions on the first two nine weeks of school. Be on the lookout for more details as well as the elective course sign-up sheet.
Monday: No School due to Snow Day
Tuesday-Wednesday: Writing Day- Students continued to work on their drafts for their definition essay. Thursday-Friday: Computer Lab-Students used this time to type their drafts in a Google Doc. Friday was the last day students would have class time to work on their essays. All essays should be finished and shared by Monday. Students should be working on their definition essays. By Tuesday, students should have at least 2 body paragraphs drafted in their composition notebooks. If they have access to the internet, they should go ahead and type the paragraphs in their Google doc.
The deadline for the essay is this Friday (12/15). We will give the students at least 2 days in the lab to type. Students who have assigned classroom ipads will have access to type in class as well. This counts as a Performance Task grade. Students will take the second Reading Inventory (RI) this Monday and Tuesday. The goal is to see an increase in Lexile scores. Please make sure your student is present and well rested on Monday. Thank you!
Monday: Because some of the students were out attending the College Bound Trip, students used the class time to work in the Zinc Reading Lab in Springboard Online. I have assigned several articles and vocabulary practices. These are ongoing assignments that will be checked periodically. Students are expected to work on these at home and will have class time on certain days.
Tuesday-Wednesday- Springboard Lesson 1.16: We looked at the components of an introductory paragraph and had a mini-lesson on writing thesis statements. The lesson culminated with the students writing their introductory paragraphs, typing them in a google doc and sharing it with me (5th) and/or Ms. Smith (periods 4, 6 and 7). Students who didn't get a chance to start of finish typing their introductory paragraph will need to do so by Monday. They need to use their google steam accounts. Thursday: I was out on this day for professional development. The students were left with assignments from the SCOPE magazine. These can be found in EDMODO. The students who wasted time and didn't complete any work will not be allowed to make these assignments up. Friday: Reading Day Monday-Tuesday: Students completed Lesson 1.12 in the Springboard textbook.
This lesson explained and gave examples of the definition strategies the students will need to incorporate in Embedded Assessment 2. Wednesday: Assessment Day The students took 2 quizzes. One was on the readings from Springboard and the second one was on the vocabulary from the readings. Thursday: Media Center The students joined Google Classrooms and were able to check out and return books. Periods 4, 6 and 7 were split. Half of the students went to the Media Center while the other half stayed and created accounts for Springboard On-line. They were also introduced to Zinc Reading Labs inside of Springboard On-line.
